Frequently Asked Questions

Where do Oregon by Kayak trips take place?

Oregon by Kayak wants you to have an enjoyable, safe sea kayaking experience. Therefore, we encourage you to choose a destination that suits your paddling ability/experience. In central Oregon there are many different bodies of water to paddle and explore. Our focus is on the central Oregon coast, and the associated lakes, rivers and bays. We travel the coast from our home base of Yachats, north to Lincoln City and south to Reedsport. If you are interested in a destination outside of that range contact us and we will consider if we are able to accommodate you. Summer is a good time to paddle the Cascade lakes.

How should we dress for a day of sea kayaking?

Dress according to the current weather and prepare for exposure to sun, sea water and wind. It is smart to dress in layers, with a thin layer closest to your skin, and to wear synthetic fibers that will wick water away from your skin.  Appropriate footwear is important. Sandles, aqua socks or old tennis shoes are recommended. I encourage people to bring a hat, sunglasses and sun screen. Remember that there is room in the kayaks for stowing extra clothing and other belongings.

What is the best time of year for sea kayaking on the Oregon coast?

The best conditions for sea kayaking the Oregon coast occur in the late Summer and early Fall.  From September to early November the ambient temperature remains fairly high and the summer winds subside.  Summer is a great time to paddle on the coast, but kayakers have to contend with the ever present afternoon winds.
